Work makes you free i think it means that if you work how they want you to work the way you want them to and if your not working properly they will kill you becouse they think your are worthless.
To Elie i think that he was sort of mently strong but not as physicaly strong. He doubted alot during all the things knowing that saving his fathers life risk saving his life.
