Leonardo
Leonardo da Vinci was born to Florentine notary and a peasant woman in Vinci, Italy, just outside of Florence. His father raised him, while his mother married someone else. Growing up at his father's home, Leonardo had access to scholoarly texts that were owned by family and friends. When he was about 15 he apprenticed to the renowned workshop of Andrea del Verrochio where Leonardo's genius was proven by the fact that he was better than his master. After traveling the world, he became one of the most sought after artists.
In aplace previously dominated by highly descriptive and strange religious paintings, Leonardo's desire to paint realistically was bold. He went beyond what he was taught and made a scientific study of light and shadows in nature. It dawned on him that objects were three dimensional that were defined by light and shadow. Leonardo's most famous paintings include the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. His works comprise of The Adoration of the Magi, The Virgin of the Rocks, Vitruvian Man, The Battle of Anghiari, and many more.
