•Took place on the night of November 11, 1940 into November 12, 1940 •First all-aircraft attack in naval history •Flew a small amount of aircraft from an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean Sea •The effect on the Italian warships was the end of the “big gun” ships and rise of naval air- power •The British were attacking the Italian fleet at the harbor of Taranto •There were two waves of attack-aircraft the second fallowed 30 minutes after the first •The first wave damaged 3 major battle ships •The second wave came in and finished the work destroying 2 of the 3 ships •The Italian fleet suffered heavily from this attack •The Italian battle ship fleet lost half its power
•The landing zone was divided in to five sections British received two codenamed sword and gold •Gold beach began with aircraft and surface ships attacking •Germans had mines scattered throughout the water. •Specialist teams swam in the water and disarmed mines •400 killed or wounded at gold beach •Air and naval attacks were less effective at sword beach •600 killed or wounded •Germans had set up concrete walls, mine fields, and anti-tank ditches. •Special tanks were used ones with giant rollers that whipped chains and destroyed mine fields, other had giant bridges to get over walls and ditches
