Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, January 19, 1809. His mother was named Elizabeth and his father's name was David. Edgar had two siblings named Henry and Rosalie. Elizabeth however, seperated from David and took her three children with her. Poe experienced tragedy at the young age of two when his mother died. He was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. John Allan. John was a merchant and quite succesful so Poe grew up in good surroundings. Poe went to school for five years at the age of six. He was a very smart kid learning latin, french, math, and history. Poe then returned to America and he continued learning until he went to the University if Virginia in 1826 as a 17 year old. John Poe though, did not give Poe all the money necessary and Poe became a massive drinker and a massive money spender and dropped out. Poe was a nobody with no job or no money. In 1829, Mrs. Allan died and John Allan signed Edgar into West Point. He entered the school as a cadet but he wasn't able attend that school for very long because John Allan didn't give him any money. He was dismissed on March 6, 1831. Before becoming a succesful writer Edgar was a complete bum. In 1831, he submitted stories to a lot of magazines but they were all rejected. He had no money, no job, and no friends and his father never helped him. Finally, in 1835, he got a job as an editor because he won some contest.
