Gold Rush
In 1839, a man named John Sutter (Johann Suter) traveled to San Francisco along with ten Hawaiian “laborers” in search of land to build a new ranch. Sutter picked an area where the American and Sacramento Rivers met and built his sawmill. On January 24, 1848 Sutter’s carpenter John Marshall found gold in the river near the mill. Sutter and Marshall tried to keep quiet about the gold but word quickly got out. The government said they would grant ownership of the property of the land to Sutter if he would tell them about the gold. Sadly, Sutter was never granted ownership of the land and was force to allow people to come on to the property. Soon hundreds of people were mining in Sutter’s land and those people became known as the forty-niners. And from the point the first bit of gold was found to the point where people were setting up mines, became known as the California Gold Rush.
Back-story
Came from New York, Boston, and Galveston. In the first half of 1849, 5,000 miners came from Chili alone. Some came from as far as China.
Forty-niners
Greatest number of forty-niners came on land. They traveled on the Oregon Trail and the Mormon Trail. In 1849 alone, more than 80,000 people came across the continent. If people didn’t came by land they came by water.
Traveling
The Gold Rush was a HUGE $$ sign for the economical front. With more and more people coming to the US stores were selling more of everyday items and people were spending money like crazy looking for gold.
The Gold Rush helped populate a portion of the US. It also brought in money from all different places. The Gold Rush helped make the US strong and even after it was done some people still come just to see if they can get even the slightest bit of gold.
The California Gold Rush brought more people to the states and helped populate the west side.
The North and the South fought over California because of the gold found there.
