Marine Diatoms
Diatoms use both sexual and asexual reproduction. They start out with asexual reproduction, with a uniqe process called "shrinking division." This is when they get smaller and smaller as they split, until they get small enough to switch over to sexual reproduction.

Used As:
My microorganism is considered helpful, for it supplements humankind. * A Filter - for paint, alcoholic beverages, non-alcoholic beverages, medicines, and chemicals * A Filler - for paper, paint, ceramics, and detergent * Insulation - for sound and heat insulation * Mild Abrasive - for metal polish and toothpaste, (although it is not used in toothpaste as often, for many companies have switched over to calcium carbonate) * Optical Image Quality - an old use of Diatoms, helpful with their grid-like pattern
Helpful
Diatoms especially thrive in marine and freshwater environments. They can also live on rocks, plants and mud, but it must be near a body of water.
Habitat
+ Diatoms may be helpful to us, but they are sometimes harmful to tiny creatures such as snails, frogs, or any other small creatures with exposed skin. They latch themselves on to the body of the creature, which causes the critter pain, for diatoms feel like sharp little shards of glass.
* They have a unique reproduction system, called "shrinking division" * Scientists think Diatoms supply the Earth with 35% of it's oxygen * Diatoms go all the way back to Pre-Cambrian time * Diatoms come in two types: Centrales and Pennales
