Herbert Boyer Born July 10, 1936 in Darry, PA Saint Vincent College
Stanley Cohen Born June 30, 1935 in Perth Amboy, NJ Graduated from Rutger Un.
Paul Berg Born June 30, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY Graduated from Penn St. Un.
Cohen and Boyer proposed the idea that DNA can be cloned into something else. This lead to the development of recombinant DNA technology, showing that genetically engineered DNA molecules may be cloned into foreign cells. (As shown above)
Stanley C. & Herbert B.
Berg is famous for seemingly involving into recombinant DNA work. He was involved in the Cohen-Boyer 'era' but was not in nothing major in it. In 1972 he was then known for inserting viral DNA into bacterial DNA., which helped other biochemist, learn more and more about DNA.
This is a model of a cell. This type of cell was used in the experiments of Cohen and Boyer.
From Cohen and Boyer, this type of cloning was made using their knowledge.
Fun fact:
All these men are still alive today.
Cohen & Boyer won the 1980 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research
Biotech Chemist: Boyer and Cohen Scene 1 Cohen: Say here Boyer, I wonder if you combine and transplant genes, could you make something useful out of it. Like an antibiotic? Boyer: I’ve been wondering the same as well, Mr. Cohen. I also wonder if you could combine gens from bacteria with genes from eukaryotic cells. Cohen: Well I guess the only way to find out is to experiment and record our research. Boyer: Yeah, I guess so. Scene 2 Cohen: So Boyer, did you find anything that could make your predictions true? Boyer: Yes, yes I did. I found out that all my predictions were true, and you remember when we thought DNA could be cloned into something else? Cohen: Yes, I remember. Boyer: Well that is also true. Cohen: Wow, amazing. Mr. Berg would you pass me my research papers to show to Mr. Boyer? Berg: ZZZZZZZZZ. Yes, mommy. Cohen: Mr. Berg! Would you please hand me my research papers? Berg: Ughhhh Huh ZZZZZZZZ Cohen: Mr. Berg!! WOULD YOU PLEASE HAND ME MY RESEARCH PAPERS? Berg: Huh huh Ohhh Ohhhh. Yes, Mr. Cohen quite certainly. (Berg gives Cohen papers) Cohen: Thank you. Berg: Your welcome, and excuse my absence Cohen: Yes Boyer: Well Cohen, did your research say the same as mine/ Cohen: I’m afraid…. It did, it did. It also says we developed recombinant DNA with research, and that we are going up on the social ladder! Scene 3 Boyer: Well it really did pay off, just like you said Mr. Cohen. Cohen: Yes, and now we are awarded with the 1980 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. Berg: We did it!! Cohen & Boyer: Shut up!! Berg: Haha very funny.
