common name: typhoid fever
scientific name: Salmonella typhi
More about Tyhoid Fever *About 17 million people a year are infected with this disease, and about 600,000 die. *This epidemic was first discovered in the early 17th century. *Symptoms are fever, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, and possibly constipation, diarrhea, and enlarjment of the spleen. *The mortality rate of Typhoid fever is 12-30% depending on where you live. If treated there is a 99% chance of survival.
The most commom cause of typhoid fever is by drinking water inflicted with the urine or feces of an infected person. This is why the disease mainly occurs in third world countries, like Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The disease multiplies in the small intestine and moves on throughout the body to conquer other orgnisms. This process takes 1-3 weeks. The best way to prevent this disease is by drinking clean, purified water. In the U.S. there is an average of 400 cases a year, with approximatley 70% of patients having traveled the world within 6 weeks of getting the disease.
Vaccine The Salmonella typhi vaccine is made up of ampicillin, ceftriaxone and chlororamphenicol. Antibiodics help within 2-3 days. If you do not get treatment there is a 20% chance you will die.
