Poem Analysis
The Poem Planet Earth By: P.K. Page
The poem Planet Earth by P.K. Page is probably one of the most famous poems she wrote. It uses strong imagery by comparing the earth to a laundress; “It has to be loved the way a laundress loves her linens, the way she moves her hands caressing the fine muslins…” –Planet Earth by: P.K. Page she tells how u must treat the earth and how to respect it. The theme is how we should respect the earth by using lots of different metaphors and similes. This poem was used in the United Nation’s -Dialogue Among Civilizations Through Poetry world wide event, as its center piece. She uses at the start a poem by: Pablo Nerunda, “In praise of Ironing” to help bring what she is trying to say into understandable terms.
The First paragraph tells how you go about starting to help the earth. It also has how to love it, by using real world comparisons. Such as “…a lover coaxing, or a mother praising…” While the second paragraph gets more specific. It tells you in more detail the metaphorical things we have to do. For example; “The trees must be washed…they have to be polished…the rivers and little streams...must be washed and starched or shined into brightness…” Then Paragraph three talks about the beauty in the world. It uses strong descriptive words; “…the wine-dark, grey, green, sea...” and also; “…and sky- such an O! overhead- night and day must be burnished and rubbed.” In paragraph four she writes about how the workd will look like if you treat it right.
