SAT Prep: Math
The Mean is the average. An average is where you add up all of the terms and then divide by the number of terms.
The median is the number in the middle of the numbers (if they are in numerical order). If you have an even number of numbers, then you have to take the average of the two in the middle.
The three best ways to find the central tendency of a dataset are to find: The Median, The Mode, or The Mean
Central Tendency is a representative value for a dataset.
The mode is the most frequently occuring value.
For different types of data you use different ways to find the central tendency. For nominal data (such as sex or race) you must use the mode. For ordinal data (such as salary categories) you must use the mode or the median.
Some sets of data are skewed. This means that the distribution of numbers is off so that the mean and median are not the same.
The range is the difference between the highest value and the lowest value.
An outlier is a term that is much higher or lower than the other data.
The midrange is the average of the smallest and largest measurements.
