In the end of the book Ann finds that Mr. Loomis is insane, she cant live with the fear of him hunting her down any longer, she takes the radio-active suit and leaves, she does not know where she is heading, but she is going to find more people, she knows she can, she believes in herself.
This book is a story of survival, of going with your gut feeling, a fear of being alone, but then feeling safer alone. Ann Burden is a young girl who is the last person left in the area where she lives, maybe even the world... Until one day a strange man wearing a green suit walks into her valley. He becomes sick and Ann takes him in, his name is Mr. Loomis, she does not know much about this man but his strange dreams about Edward and gunshots begin to worry her. Ann is a very strong hearted girl, she lives off her own food she has grown, cows milk she has fed, chickens she has looked after herself, one of the most exciting things she had happen to her was when she discoverd she could use petrol from the fuel tanks to run the tractor and make bigger pastures,
