Z for Zachariah is a story from the point of veiw of a teenage girl, Ann Burden.. She lives in a vally with her family. There was a nuclear war and the vally protected them from the radiation. Her family went out looking for survivers but never reterned. She lived by herself untill she saw a stranger in a weird suit come up over the hill.... but can Ann trust this man?
They loose trust in one another eventualy and Ann moves back to her cave. For several months the two play cat-and-mouse. Ann wishes for them both to live in the valley, but one day, he shoots her in the ankle and she realizes she must leave. She steals his suit and cart, but talks with Loomis one last time. He points her in the direction out of the valley where he had seen birds circling. And she leaves.
The mans name is John Loomis, though Ann prefers to call him Mr. Loomis, He is a scientist who helped design the radiation proof material used to make the suit he wears. He gets radiation posioning from the river. Ann has to nurse him back to health. After Loomis recovers they start making plans for the future.
The book is writen in the form of a diary writen by Ann.. It includes dates, what was going on that day, and what emotions she was feeling.
Z for Zachariah won an Edgar Award in 1976.
