~There are 4 inner planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. ~They are also called terrestrial planets because the are similar to Earth. ~They consist mostly of solid rock & have metallic cores. ~The number of moons are from 0-2 ~The surface in inner planets have bowl-shaped depressions called impact craters that were caused by collisions of the planets with other objects in space.
SECTION 3: the inner planets
VOCAB: .Terrestrial Planet: one of the highly dense planets mearest to the sun; the 4 inner planets
MERCURY: ! closet to the sun ! every 88 days it circles the sun ! rotates on its axis once every 59 days ! The Romans named it after the messenger of gods who moved quickly
VENUS: - 2nd planets from the sun and orbits every 255 days, but it rotates slowly once every 243 days. - in some ways Venus and Earth are twins, almost the same size, mass, and density - the biggest differnce is the atmosphere. Venus' pressure is almost 90 times more as Earth's
EARTH: * 3rd planet from the sun * orbital is 365 1/4 days and makes 1 rotation every day * 1 large moon * has an extremely active geologic history. In the last 250 million years Earth separated from single landmass and drifted to present positions.. * weathering and erosion changed and continues to change Earth's surface.
MARS: ^ 4th planet from the sun ^ the average distance is about 228 million kilometers from the sun ^ has been geologically active in the past because of massive volcanoes.
QUESTIONS: 1. What is terrestrial? 2. HOw many inner planets are there? Name them. 3. What is the order of planets from the closets to the farthest from the sun? 4. What is unique about Earth's atmosphere and distance?
