Cyrillic Alphabet
Illuminated Manuscripts
Mosaics
The Cyrillic alphabet was based on the Greek uncial script. The Cyrillic Alphabet was developed by two brothers Cyril and Methodius, who brought Christianity to the southern Slavs. The Cyrillic Alphabet is still used today in a few countries,
With the rise of the Byzantine Empire from the 5th century on, the art form took on new characteristics. These included Eastern influences in style and the use of special glass. These were made from thick sheets of colored glass cut into small pieces then put together. Most mosaics represented religous ideas, however some showed emperors.
Illuminated manuscripts were another major genre of Byzantine art. The most common illustrated texts were religious, both scripture or well-known figures. Secular texts were also illuminated. An exampleincludes the Alexander Romance.
