The HIV & AIDS crisis HIV & AIDS is more than just a health issue it is one of the most devastating crises the world has ever experienced. Globally, around 39.5 million people are currently living with HIV almost equal to Australias population twice over. Although HIV is a virus, its real cause is poverty. Its often the poorest and most vulnerable in a community who become infected because of inequality and limited education, healthcare and treatment. But its not just a disease of the poorest people. Its killing people from all walks of life, from doctors to politicians. And its setting back development in poor countries by decades. For a healthy world socially and economically we need a healthy population, with the knowledge and skills to prevent HIV transmission, and access to the drugs that control HIV. Combating this devastating disease will take a worldwide effort, but it is possible.
