The Democratic Party
Barack Obama (top right) - As President of the United States, Obama is the leader of the party within the government as well as the figurehead of the party. Obama has the potential to lead the party into an new era of power. Joe Biden - As the Vice-President, his position is used mostly to balance the charasteristics of Obama, while still maintaining Democratic principles. His duty is to ensure the sucess of Obama as an advisor with greater experience. Nancy Pelosi (lower right) - as Speaker of the House, her duty is to ensure the passage of Democratic endorsed legislation as well as coordinate House activity.
Robert Byrd (lower left) - as President Pro Tempore of the Senate, his position is similar to Pelosi's but in the Senate. Tim Kaine (upper right) - as National Chairman, his duties include acting as party spokeman, raising and distributing campaign funds, and working as an in-between for the different levels of the party's organization.
Originally used as an insult for the party, Democrats have adopted the donkey (upper-left) as the symbol for their party.
Every four years, the Democrats hold a convention (bottom-middle) in which the platform of the party is decided and candidates are chosen for president and other potential offices.
The Democratic Party first appeared after Andrew Jackson defected from the earlier Democratic Republican Party and formed his own political party. Following the Civil War, the Democratic Party had power over a "Solid South" . From then untill FDR's administration in 1932, the party failed to compete evenly with the Republican Party. For twenty years, the party held the presidency until it was lost to Republican Dwight Eisenhower in 1952. For the next several decades power switched back and forth between the parties through the presedencies of Kennedy (D), Johnson (D), Nixon (R), Carter (D), Reagan (R), Bush (R), Clinton (D), Bush (R). Currently under the Obama administration, the Democrats hold heavy power in government, controlling both Houses of Congress and the Executive Branch.
The Democrats have a more left-wing approach to government than their Republican counterparts. On the economy, Democrats promote large stimulus packages in order to bail out the economy. Democrats support increased funding in our public school systems in order to provide a better education for American children as well as increasing the number of college graduates in the United States. On Iraq, Democrats plan a revised strategy for Iraq, and refocusing military attention toward legitimate terrorist threats. Democrats also support such civil rights actions as same-sex marriage. The Democratic Party currently holds power over the American Government and continues to have a large support of citizens. Obama's presidency could relflect FDR's administration and lead the Democrats into a new reign of American Politics. Should Obama leave a positive mark on the nation, the Democrat's power should be ensured for years to come. However, failure to deliver could result in Republicans regaining their lost influence. I predict that Democrats will continue their influence in the next several elections.
