The Sepoy Mutiny began when the Hindus and Muslims found out that their weapon cartrridges had animal fat seals on them that they had to bite to use. The Sepoys were controlled by the British. They were soldiers fighting for them. Gossip spread about the Cartridges in 1857. It really started when a garrison didn't accept the knew weapons. The British handled the crisis badly. The disobediant soldiers were jailed. On May 10 1857 the Sepoys marched into Delhi. The rebellion spread to much of Northern India. The East India Co. took more than a year to regain control. The British Gov. even sent troops to help. The rebellion didn't last due to poor leadership. The Hindus would rather be under British control than have the Muslim Empire rise agian. Most of the Indian princes had made allies with the British and did not part take in the rebellion. The Sikhs also remained loyal to the British. After the rebllion the Sikhs were the primary soldiers for the British. Afterwards Britian took direct command of India. India was then called the Raj. India was divided into 11 provinces and some 250 districts. To reward the many Princes the British respected all treaties the made with East India Co.. The sepoy rebellion fueled the racist attitudes of the English. Mutiny increase d distrust between the british and the Indians. In the 1800's indians demanded modernization and a greater role in Politics. Ram Mohun Roy began a campaign to move away from traditional practices like widow sucides. Indians started to resent being 2nd class people in their own nation.
