Chloroplast: an organelle found in plants and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs
Chloroplasts and Chromoplasts
Chromoplast: is a plastid containing color of pigments that may or may not take part in photosynthesis
Shape varies depending on crystalline inclusions
Function: where photosynthesis takes place production of starch, certain amino acids and lipids some of the colorful pigments in flowers nitrogen metabolism
Contain: Yellow xantophyll and yellow to red carotinoids which make them red, orange, or yellow in color. Examples: Fall leaves, flower petals, fruits and vegetables (carrots, tomatoes)
Lens-shaped and usually around 5 microns long so can absorb light better. Shape varies in algae
Stroma- where reactions occur and starches are created Thylakoid- has chlorophyll molecules on surface (stack of thylakoid= granum) Chlorophyll- uses sunlight to create sugars Stromal lamellae- skeleton of chloroplast All protected by two membranes
