A cell wall is a characteristic of prokaryotic cells, but it is also found in plant cells.
The cell wall is composed mainly of cellulose, which is made on the outside of the plasma membrane to fit the shape of the cell. When some cells stop growing, it secretes a secondary celll wall between the primary cell wall and the plasma membrane. The secondary cell wall is very strong and cannot expand.
The cell wall is a rigid layer on the outside of a cell's plasma membrane.
The cell wall performs similar functions to the plasma membrane in that it allows water, ions, and some molecules into the cell.
