Plasma Membrane (Cell Membrane)
The plasma membrane plays a vital role in all Eukaryotic cells. It is the outer boundary of the cell where all materials either enter or exit.
The membrane... - only allows certain molecules to enter/exit -provides a barrier between the internal functions and the surrounding outside -lets the cell interact with the environment
The membrane is a fluid mosiac which meas that it is more like a fluid than a solid
The membrane is made of phospholipids. Phospholipids have a hydrophilic (water-loving)head and two hydrophobic (water-hating) tails. This means that the phospholipid will line up so that the tails are facing inward into each other and only the head is exposed to water
Several different types of protiens are found embedded within the membrane. They are called integral proteins: - Peripheral proteins, such as an enzyme helps chemical reactions inside the cell. They are only exposed on one side - Proteins that are exposed on both sides help transport molecules through the membrane, such as a transport protein. - Receptor proteins are also exposed on both sides, and they help to recognize and bind to substances outside the cell.
