The Clarinet Family
The Bass Clarinet
The Bb Clarinet
The clarinet was invented around 1690 by Johann Christoph Denner with help from his son Jacob. He created it by adding two keys to an earlier instrument called the chalumeau, the first true single reed instrument. This increased the instrument's range by over two octaves. Denner also invented a better mouthpiece and improved the bell. Since then, many more types have been invented such as the bass clarinet, Eb clarinet, and the Alto clarinet, just to name a few. Mozart was the first composer to use the clarinet in a symphony.
These are the six major types of clarinets. There are over a dozen in all. Many are rare or used as solo instruments. Each clarinet produces a unique sound and plays in a differen range.
The bass clarinet was invented in the second half of the Eighteenth Century. It was used only in orchestras until the 1920's when it was being used in bands. Although it was in the band, it usually doubled other instruments' parts or substituted for other brass-voiced instruments when they were unavailable. Ever since the 1950's the bass clarinet has been used often as a solo instrument, but today it is widely used in bands everywhere.
