Walter Maynard Ferguson was born in Verdun, Quebec, Canada on May 4, 1928. He first heard the trumpet at his church and soon took it up and started a successful career of jazz and live preformences.

He is best known for working with Stan Kenton and his orchestra as well as Paramount Pictures.. He won Down Beat's Best Trumpeteraward three years in a row. He is also known for his ability to play in an incredibly high range easily hitting a Double High C.
After playing in many different bands, he started the Big Bop Novueau Band. Most of his albums were produced under this band. it was famous for being an outlet for young new mucicians. After releasing albums such as Chameleon, and the Essence of Maynard Ferguson, he toured and played innumeral preformences. He passed away in Augest of 2006 due to Kidney and Liver faliure after having an infection in his abdominal region. After his death, trumpet players he worked with and influenced got together to make a tribute band in which they played songs he wrote and arranged.
After leaving the Orchestra and Paramount, he was asked to lead the Birdland Dream Band. The band was to play at Birdland Jazz Club in New York. It was made of All-Star musicians such as Slide Hampton, Jay Chattaway, Bob Brookmeyer. The band didn't go very far due to the fact they only made two albums.

He also helped to create two instruments. the Fire bird, a combination valve and slide trumpet., as well as Superbone, a valve/slide trombone.
