Lucy was born in Chicago on July 2,1878. Because of the style of parenting that her father used, she was very shy, nervous, and withdrawn. Her memories of her childhood were not happy ones.
During her childhood, she did not attend school regularly. She was tutored at home because of her anxiety. She used this time to read all of the books that her father had in the home.

John Dewey, Alice Palmer, and Jane Addams were guests in her family's home. Lucy read Dewey's works, learning about educational practices. Jane Addams and Alice Palmer became mentors for her.
