In 1912, Lucy married Wesley Clair Mitchell. He supported her professional goals, as well as being an accepting husband. She did not feel the need to remain single, like many educated women of her time, because of Wesley's commitment to her and her social ideals.
After marrying, she moved to New York and began an in-depth study of children. Lucy attended Teachers College at Columbia University. It was here that she became associated with John Dewey once again. While at Teachers College, it was her research that helped her better understand the home and school connection.
