In 1893, the Sprague family moved to California. Lucy attended a boarding school at the Marlborough School during the week and started finding joy in education. After graduation, Lucy moved to Massachusetts and attended Radcliffe College. She lived there with Alice Palmer and her husband.

After college, she moved back to California. Lucy was offered a job at the University of California at Berkeley. In just a few years, she became the first female dean of women and a professor. Lucy worked to create educational and social opportunities for women during this time. She spent nine years total at Berkeley and was the Dean of Women for six of those years.
Lucy created opportunities where the women on campus could explore the social conditions of the area that they lived in, go to poetry readings, and explore their community by visiting numerous sights in the community. She made sure that women found their place on campus and in the community at large.
