Lucy Sprague Mitchell: Teacher Education
The Bureau also focused on teacher education. The Cooperative School for Teachers was opened in 1913. Women from nursery schools and women's colleges were recruited to come. Practical experience, along with creative expression courses were taught. Students learned through field trips, classes, and providing service in the community.
Lucy taught her students to use their five senses in order to observe and collect data. This provided them the opportunities to practice before they stepped into the classroom. She also encouraged students to be active and reflective teachers. She focused on autonomy as the basis for learning. She wanted them to think critically, make decisons, and show respect.
Lucy took her students on field trips throughout New York in order for them to widen their realm of experiences. Long trips were taken to Washington, D.C. and the Appalachian Mountains to explore geography, social elements, political and economic issues. She did this so that teachers could understand how they could do the same with their students.
