RECIPE
WHY? These aspects are the foundation for a successful civilization. Quality tools/metals are essential to build needed structures and farm. Domestication allows a steady living area and reliable sources of food/clothing. Irrigation provides fertile soil for crops. A calender shows when to work the fields and upcoming climates. Running water and sewage keeps the city clean. A writing system introduces literature and keeps records of history. Medicine is needed to keep the people alive and healthy. Education is important to expand culture, thinking, and specialized jobs. A number system and math is essential for many things such as architecture and taxes. A strong government and army is crucial to keeping the people in order and for protection. Religion and having a peaceful outlook on life is also necessary for creating unity and socilization with neighboring people.
Many reasons why a civilization would fall is due to the lack of these ingredients. Often, a civilization with poor government and a weak army would be taken over by stronger people (Chaldeans). Many times there was no progress in a civilization's culture and education so their power would eventually fade (Lydians).
