Romanticism
Romanticism was an early 19th century European movement in which artwork was greatly influenced and paintings began to portray individualism, beauty, and extreme emotion. This painting, by John Constable, represents Romanticism art.

Romanticism exalted individualism over conformity, imagination over reason, and passionate emotions above rational thought. This movement was extremely influential.
Romantics expressed the extremities of the human condition in a confrontational manner meant to shock conventional society. Articulation of extreme emotions such as love, tranquility, triumph, revulsion, horror, and hatred in art was considered revolutionary in the late 1700's. This revolution in self-expression laid the groundwork for later artistic styles such as realism, surrealism, and modern expressionism. Romantic influence in the art world remains strong today. Painters are expected to communicate emotions, dreams, and opinions through their artwork.
