STORY OF SARDONYX: This story centers around Queen Elizabeth. She had a beautiful stone set in a gold ring and had her portrait carved on the stone. She presented the ring to the Earl of Essex as a token of friendship, assuring him that if he ever asked for help, she would be there. Later, the Earl was imprisoned for treason and condemned to die. The Earl tried to send the ringto the Queen to ask for her aid, but instead it landed in the possession of Lady Nottingham an enemy of the Earl Queen Elizabeth learned of his plight, but since he did not ask for her aid, she assumed he was to proud and so she did nothing. The Earl was beheaded. It was not until his deothbed confession by the Lady of Nottingham that the Queen learned the truth. It broke her heart.
Where is Sardonyx Found??? The most common place to find the bestexamples is in India. You can also find it places like Uruguay, Germany,Czechoslovakia, and Brazil. In the United States, sardonyx can be found in the Lake Superior region and in Oregon.
Cameos and intaglios are often carved from Sardonyx. Cameos are figures carved on a stone, where the white layer appears as relief, and the colored layer is the background. Intaglios are the reverse of cameos. They are incised figures on the stone, where the stone is carved through the dark layer to reveal the light layer.
Sardonyx is most often seen in bead form, although some material is still seen today in the carving of artifacts, broaches and cameos. In fact, the first cameos ever found were carved from sardonyx. It is said to be that Sardonyx is a gift to the Earth from Saturn, because of the multicolored bands on the gem. Astrologers also believe that the gem stone is linked to the planet Mars.
The layers in these stones range from translucent to opaque for sardonyx. The stones vary in color, too.

Sardonyx is the birthstone of August. Care and treatment: Onyx may chip or scratch rather easily, so store onyx carefully and never allow two specimens to touch each other.
Onyx in Sardonyx makes alternate with light and dark bands, which can be brown, red, black, white, and grey.
They may be white or gray, ranging to many colorful varieties. Sardonyx stones usually contain flat-banded, white and brownish-red bands.
