Rural poverty in Honduras is among the most severe in Latin America. About 53% of the population is rural, and about 75% of the rural population lives below the poverty line, unable to meet basic needs. In Honduras, there are the problems of infant mortality, child malnutrition, illiteracy, and still high population growth despite these factors. why is honduras poor? Hurricane Mitch devastated Honduras in 1998, causing over 7,000 deaths and making 15 million people homeless. Poverty worsened, economy came to a standstill, and all the buildings and roads were destroyed.
WHAT CAN BE DONE?? -Land reform that provides technical and financial assistance in small loans could reduce poverty in Honduras by allowing farmers to earn income, be self sufficient, and increase overall production. -Donations really help the foundations in Honduras for building homes for poor people, building churches, and taking care of children. -child sponsoring -missions trips -praying for the people in poverty
