California Gold Rush
Jan. 24, 1848 Today, while building a sawmill for John Sutter, I came across some shiny object that looked like gold. When I took it back, I found that it WAS gold! I doubt this will remain a secret for long... James Marshall

In the beginning, there were so little supplies and so much gold that a man would earn $25 a day and spend it all on one meal.
The sea route was very dangerous. Many people contracted diseases like Malaria and cholera, while others were stranded on the ships for weeks because there was no one to ferry them to San Francisco.
Come to California! By the 1850's, the city of San Francisco had become one of the largest cities, with one of the most diverse cultures, in the world. And all this was thanks to the Gold Rush.
mid 1849 The gold is gone, but some of us 49ers are still here. Many of my friends have resorted to a life of gambling and crime. Others have gone back home. I, though, am still digging, waiting for my dream to come true...
During the gold rush, people struck rich, and not just because of mining. Many offered their skills to the gold miners rather than mine themselves. Some examples were Levi Strauss, inventor of the jeans, and Samuel Clemens, an author.
