The main character is Brian. He is 6 ft tall, brown hair and brown eyes, and he is 16 years old.
Brian has a never say never attitude, and he is strong mentally and physically. He is not happy in modern society and prefers hunting in the wild.
Brian has gone back to the Canadian woods, travelling by canoe to find Susan, a Cree Indian, When he gets to Susan's house he finds both of her parents dead and he determines they were killed by a bear. He seeks revenge on the bear by trying to hunt it down and kill it.
Brian realizes that while hunting the bear, the bear was hunting him also.
Susan is the other character in the story. She is also aroud 16 years old. In the past he has only seen her photo. Her family had described her to Brian as adventurous and independent. He really wants to meet her because he thinks they have so much in common.
The theme of the story is one can survive in the wilderness by himself as long as he trusts his instincts. For Brian to succeed in the woods, he must always trust his heart, which is based on his experiences in the wild.
Brian is a static character in the book.
Brian found a dog that was wounded by a bear. It became his companion even in the hunt for that bear.
