So, unless you're making a concerted effort to avoid it, it's pretty difficult to consume high-fructose corn syrup in moderation." Does the CRA lie to the public in the advertisement? Not exactly, however several ethical issues arrise. The CRA, while providing facts, skirts around certain facts that may turn off consumers. The message that high-fructose corn syrup is okay in moderation is relayed, however it goes unmentioned that high-fructose corn syrup is already in virtually every product on the market, making it impossible to eat only a healthy amount. Although the CRA told the truth, they did not tell the whole truth. This is an ethical dilemma. Did the CRA act unethically by not reporting the whole truth to the public concerning the potential harm of their product?

The age-old saying "you are what you eat"may be more complex than previously understood. The Corn Refiners Association (CRA) released a television advertisement last month that stated that high-fructose corn syrup is made from corn, has no artificial ingredients, has the same calories as sugar and is okay to eat in moderation. This advertisement has raised the eyebrows of consumers. Were we incorrectly taught that high-fructose corn syrup was bad? In "Is High-Fructose Corn Syrup Really Good for You?" CNN uncovers the truth behind this supposed health detriment. Although the CRA has dedicated a large sum of money to advertising the truths of high-fructose corn syrup to the public, it is not unheard of for companies to engage in managing public perception. When faced with a decision to make regarding the purchase of a product, the public often often turns to reviews and facts. When these outlets fail to help consumers make decisions, often other media sources, such as CNN, step in and offer an opinion.

Another debated aspect of the CRA's advertisement is the claim that high-fructose corn syrup contains no artificial ingredients and is all natural. Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, points out the flaw in this reasoning. "High-fructose corn syrup starts out as cornstarch, which is chemically or enzymatically degraded to glucose and some short polymers of glucose. Another enzyme is then used to convert varying fractions of glucose into fructose," says Jacobson.

The CRA steps beyond the line of what is ethically acceptable. They not only omit the truth concerning the placement of high-fructose corn syrup, they also fail to mention the enzymes used to alter the starch originally derived from the corn. They are not fair in the information that they share with the public. Our job is to tell the truth as we find it. However, the CRA knows the truth about high-fructose corn syrup an fails to share it with the public. Thanks to CNN, the truths of high-fructose corn syrup are revealed. Consumers are asked to make thousands of decisions daily concerning the products they choose to use and trust. For every ad we lay eyes on, we form an opinion. Hopefully before consumers form and opinion based on the new CRA commercials they dig a little deeper for the facts.
