Youth Tobacco Prevention focuses on counter marketing efforts aimed at curbing youth smoking. While some, such as the author of this short article, believe that tobacco prevention advertising is successful, I believe that the less tobacco and cigarettes are mentioned in general, the better. In this case, the media is over-informing the nation. I compare this to many leadership courses I have taken which all address white privilege. I am not blind to white privilege, but I also believe that the more we point it out and preach about it, the longer it will exist. No PR is negative PR. In terms of the tobacco industry, I am curious who drives the majority of anti-smoking campaigns. By informing consumers about negative tobacco effects, advertisers still place the product in the consumer mind. Is this fair or nurturing?

However, I have a bone to pick with the media. I have no seen a tobacco commercial on television since I was a very young child. And even these were only for lose tobacco—no commercials specifically for Carleton Lights. I rarely see tobacco commercials in magazines; I do see the occasional tobacco billboard. However, I feel the media has failed us in one sense. The kinds of commercials I do see for tobacco are the ones advertising against it. Despite the fact that these commercials display tobacco in a negative light, they still place the product in the consumer mind.

Twenty years ago this was not the case. There was a slant in the media to be unfair to the public and favor those in the big tobacco industry. While smoking may be harmful, it was also helpful. Smoking was portrayed in the media as ‘cool’ and ‘hip’. Movie stars, politicians, and parents all smoked. However, recently aggressive media campaigns that confront the tobacco industry's deceptive practices have become dominant in society. The Rise and Fall of Tobacco states that the “tobacco industry has attacked public tobacco control media campaigns since 1967, when the first public tobacco control media advertisements ran.”

While some articles hold a hidden message or cause the reader to question the intent behind the author, others are more straight forward two-dimensional. The article titled Cancer Passes Heart Disease as World’s Leading Killer was a sobering article. It is hard to argue the facts. However, despite that facts themselves cannot be argued, it is possible to question what is causing the facts. In this case the killer is tobacco. The article states that “tobacco killed 100 million people in the world last century and will kill a billion in the 21st century.” In this instance, the media is doing a sufficient job of informing, nurturing, and being fair.
