The language used in CNN.com's article relays a positive tone. Words and phrases, such as "resolving the lengthy conflict", "a significant move", "mark a sidestepping of key war on terror ally", and "anticipated to be the first step in a long process to secure" manipipulate the reader to become hopeful and optimistic. Readers of the Reuters article will experience an entirely different emotion.

Perhaps CNN had more to gain from publishing an article that stated that the Taliban and Afghanistan were conducting peace talks. Perhaps a gatekeeper at Reuters was presented with two stories; one stating that Afghanistan was hosting peace talks and another that started they weren't. Perhaps this particular gatekeeper chose to publish the counter story based on a personal bias or other onrelated reasons.

This relates to the gatekeeper theory. This theory says that the news process is tended by a series of gate keepers. These gate keepers choose to allow some things in and keep some things out. Each individual's frame of reference edits what is published.

Despite the trustworthiness we relate with CNN, another article published in Reuters quoted Foreign Minister Rangeen Dadfar Spanta saying "I deny there is any contact between the Foreign Ministry and the Taliban about the negotiations."

One article that did make it past the many filters set forth by the publishers at CNN was titled "Taliban Split With Al Qaeda, Seek Peace". This article, written by Nick Robertson, explained that Taliban leaders are holding Saudi-brokered talks with the Afghan government to end the country's conflict. The article further stated that the Taliban would be severing ties with al Qaeda. I believe that this article was placed on CNN's homepage with intentions to raise moral. Mixed in with numerous economic crisi articles, this article was perhaps popular due to it's uplifting tone and promising outcome.

Overall, one must question why certain articles were published. Why did CNN chose to publish that peace talks had taken place and Reuters did not? One may assume that CNN and Reuters have different gatekeepers, both working on different ajendas.

The media headlines these past few weeks have been a blessing and a curse. While we are no longer bombarded by hot air articles that surround the lives and drama of celebrities, we have little to choose from with the majority of headlines surrounding the current economic crisis. With mostly all news articles surrounding the economy, it's a small wonder that other headlines are being published on CNN.com.
