The Enlightenment in America
-The Enlightenment, also known as the Age of Reason, was a time when the full scope of human existence was carefully examined, with an eye toward trying to perfect human society as much as possible.
All are but parts of one stupendous whole, Whose body nature is, and God the soul ... All nature is but art, unknown to thee; All chance, direction, which thou cannot see. All discord, harmony not understood; All partial evil, universal good And, spite of pride, in erring reason's spite, One truth is clear: Whatever is, is right.
Alexander Pope Poem
Rationalism
To understand the natural world and humankind's place in it solely on the basis of reason and without turning to religious belief was the goal of the wide-ranging intellectual movement called the Enlightenment. At its heart it became a conflict between religion and the inquiring mind that wanted to know and understand through reason based on evidence and proof.
One dominant characteristic of the early Enlightenment - the concern for individual human worth - received new force from religion in the reaction against reason.
1. Challenged old ways of thinking. 2. Questioned divine-right of rule. 3. Taught that people should be able to gain material well-being, social justice, and happiness in this life, not just the next.
