Captain John Smith
Captain John Smith - Born in 1580 in Willoughby, England. Fought in France for Dutch independance from Spain. In 1600 John joined the Austrian forces to fight the Turks in the Long War. Two years later, in 1602 he fought in Transylvania. There he was captured and sold as a slave. Then i n 1604 he recovered his freedom. Back in England Smith became interested in the colonization of Virginia. He set sail on December 20, 1606. He finally reached Virginia in April 1607. That same year he founded Jamestown. In December he and others were ambushed by Indian deer hunters. He was brought back to their chief Powhatan. Smith impressed him. He then was made to take part of a ritual, were he was made subordinate chief. Pochahontas( daughter of the chief) is thought to have saved him. In September 1608, Smith was elected president of the local council. Later in October 1609, after being accidentally injured he returned to England and never returned. Smith spent the rest of his life as a writer. He died at the age of 51 in 1631.
