The Enlightenment in America
"The most formidable weapon against errors of every kind is reason."
- Thomas Paine
Thomas Paine was author to the book The Age of Reason, where he declared that all churches were "set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit." He promoted liberal doctrines of deism. Deists relied on reason rather than revelation, on science rather than the Bible.
Jonathan Edwards, an intellectual pastor, first ignighted the Great Awakening in Northampton, Massachusettes. He proclaimed foolishness of believing in salvation through good works and affirmed the need for complete dependence on God's grace. His most famouse sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"
George Whitefield, a talented orator, spread his message of human helplessness and devine power. During his revival meetings, countless sinners professed conversion.
Charles Grandison Finney was a great revival preacher. Trying to create a perfect Christian kingdom, he denounced both alcohol and slavery.
