Wishes What are wishes, without the dreams to comply. Perhaps they are the hearts voice, that lays deep inside. Maybe it's the soul that sleeps, under the mask of its dreams. On a thread of uncertainty, or so it seems to be. Wishes are the hearts most desires, when all appears cloudy and grey. A wish is what keeps our souls afloat, when our dreams are shattered and frayed. Keep your wishes locked up inside, for you never know what life has in store. You never know what wish, just might come true, from the dreams that you hold, just for you. By: Katie Klopfer (c) 1997
I chose this poem because it is something I agree with entirely. I, myself, am wishful person, and so this poem, in a way, reflects my own thoughts. It is a rather uplifting poem that reminds me that, no matter how hard things may seem, you still have, and always will, have your wishes and dreams with you. It’s a poetic way to explain that wishes can come in many forms (ex. hearts voice, soul that sleeps, hearts most desires, etc.). The mood is uplifting and hopeful, so an appropriate color would be a lemon or mustard yellow as the background. Since the background in a light color, the font should be dark, like a black or navy.
I chose this picture for the poem because the clouds in this image are grey, and there’s a verse in the poem that reads “when all is cloudy and grey” and that reminded me of this picture. I also chose this picture because it’s very surreal, and dreams are often surreal, and dreams are included a few times in the poem. The verse “a wish is what keeps our souls afloat” made me think of wings, which made me think of an angel. That is why there’s an angel in the picture.
The Poetic devices used in this poem are metaphors and repetition. The metaphors are comparing wishes with things such as a hearts voice, or a thread of uncertainty, and so on. There repetition is with the words wish and dream because one or both of those words are included in each stanza.
