-The Battle of Fredericksburg was took place during the American Civil War. - Took place December 11-15, 1862 -Union: Army of the Potomac President Lincoln replaced General McClellan' with Major General Ambrose E. Burnside, 100,007 men -Confederates - Army of Northern Virginia, General Robert E. Lee 72,497 men -Burnside launched a attack against the Confederate capital, Richmond, a strategically important town on the Rappahannock River. -The Army of the Potomac, arrived in Fredericksburg on November 17 -Burnside's campaign was delayed for over a week when material he had ordered for pontoon bridges did not arrive on time -Meanwhile, Lee was concentrating on settling his Army of Northern Virginia, on the high ground behind Fredericksburg. -December 11: The pontoons arrived and Burnside crossed the river -Confederates withdrew and Federal soldiers and bombarded the town, from which the citizens had been evacuated. -December 13: Burnside was prepared attack to drive Lee's forces from Prospect Hill and Marye’s Heights just outside Fredericksburg.. He ordered a series of useless frontal assaults that resulted in staggering loss. This was lead by General Meade and General Gibbon -The main assault was south of Fredericksburg -Over the course of the afternoon, Federal brigades charged the wall of Confederate fire. Not a single Federal soldier reached Longstreet's line. - On December 15, Burnside ordered his defeated army back across the Rappahannock. -The Confederates were victorious at Fredericksburg .
