This quote means that if one person is in the wrong doing, do not reply back with negativity. By fighting back, you're only making the problem worse. In Ghandi's way of thinking, it is better to solve a problem by civil disobediance.
This relates to India's quest for independance because some people sought revenge against each other. This went against Ghandi's tactic of civil disobedience , which is the idea that if someone hits you, you do not strike back.
This quote relates to people today because fighting back can only make things worse and cause more contraverse in the world.
