The other day I was visiting a friend from college. She graduated and has what I consider a "big girl job". Having this job allows her to have some luxuries in life... luxuries that someone like me, that has chosen to go back to school doesn't have. You know, groceries, a fabulous wardrobe, and cable television... Well, not just any cable television, this new thing i've never experienced... DVR. What a confusing world this is. I consider myself to be efficient in the technology world, but this DVR thing boggles my mind. She was recording, rewinding, fast-forwarding, tuning, and goodness knows what else. It blew my 12 channels out of the water. Besides not being able to work it, I also didn't appreciate it. Don't get me wrong, it is a great idea. However, I like the freedom of my 12 channels. At one point she was stuck recording a few shows at the same time that the DVR would not let her turn the channel to something she was not recording. Big problem with me, I refuse to let my television tell me what to do. The kicker for me was that she had the liberty to fast-forward through the commercials. Good for her, awful for the advertising junkie sitting next to her! All I could think about was the hard work that went to making that tv spot... the copywriter that probably took hours to find the perfect tagline, the graphic design that spent days perfecting shadows!! I'll let her keep her fancy t.v... but I would take the rewind option, just so I could replay those really interesting spots that provoke a great idea!
