Murder and hunting of humans is one man’s idea of fun. The setting of this story plays an important role because the actions are specific to the environment chosen by the author. The development of the character allows the reader to observe changes and rising tension throughout the story. The examination of exploitation within the story is very important because the author’s purpose is revealed in writing the story. The author’s purpose of the story is shown through the development of character, exploitation, and setting provides the reader with a new perspective on the human condition. As observed in the story The Most Dangerous Game written by Richard Connell.
The setting of this story plays a big role in how the whole story is acted out. For example the setting of the story is chosen by the author for a specific reason, as shown in the following quote. ““The old charts call it ‘Ship-Trap Island,’” Whitney Replied. “A suggestive name, isn’t it? Sailors have a curious dread of the place. I don’t know why. Some superstition-”” (Connell 19) The author reveals through this quote that the island is not a very good place. It has a bad reputation with sailors and other people. The setting of this story is important because without it the story would not make any sense. The name of the Island gives the reader a feeling that nothing good will come of the island.
The main character changes through out the story this allows the reader to feel the tension of the story. For example the following quotes show how the character develops during the story. ““You’re a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels.””(Connell 19) This shows how at first he did not care about how the animals felt that he was hunting. But the following quote shows how he changes during the story. “The General was saving him for another day’s sport! The Cossack was the cat; he was the mouse. Then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror.” (Connell 32) The quotes help to show how the character changed during the story. At first he did not really care about his prey but after he became the prey he then started to know what the animals felt. The development of the character is important to the story because it helps to reveal the exploitation of humans and animals for some ones pleasure.
The characters of this story take advantage of each other this helps to show the development of exploitation. For example the development of exploitation is shown through the characters in the following quote. ““If I wish to hunt why should I not? I hunt the scum of the earth-sailors from tramp ships-lascars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels-a thoroughbred horse of hound is worth more than a score of them.”” (Connell 27) This quote shows how someone could take advantage of a human life for his own enjoyment. It lets you see what some people think of another person’s life. The development of exploitation is important to the development of the story and is used in the story because it demonstrates the author’s purpose in writing the story. The reader is able to understand the author’s purpose from this quote. In the society that we live in today it is very easy to see how people are mistreated for the enjoyment of others.
The author’s purpose of this story is very important to the outcome of this story. The author’s purpose is observed in the end of the story through the following quote. “The general sucked in his breath and smiled. “I congratulate you,” he said. “You have won the game.” Rainsford did not smile. “I am still a beast at bay.” he said, in a low, hoarse voice. “Get ready, General Zaroff,”” (Connell 36) This quote shows the author’s purpose in writing the story which is that exploitation never ends it keeps going on and will continue to as long as there is life on Earth. The purpose of this story is observed through the whole story and is observed through the development of characters, exploitation, and setting. It shows that no matter what happens the world will never be perfect. As an effect of this story, I now have a better understanding of how the human condition is manipulated and played with on a daily bases for the gain of others
