Solar Eclipses When the moon is directly bewteen Earth and the sun, an eclipse of the sun, or a solar eclipse occurs. If the moon is close to earth a total eclipse occurs. When the moon is far away from Earth the moon's shadow does not fall on earth's surface, and an annular eclipse occurs.
