In 1826 , the French Chemist, Antoine Jerome Balard discovered the element Bromine. Bromine is the only liquid nonmetallic element. Its atomic number is 35 and its atomic mass is 79.904.

If inhaled as a vapor, it could be very harmful. Bromine is extremely poisonous and affects the eyes and throat. It can damage the Respiratory System and can also cause death. In the Victorian Era, People drank a potion containing a compound of Bromine to help them sleep.
About 20 percent of Bromine is used in drilling wells. Some other common uses are in flame retardents, pesticides, in water purification and in photographic paper. Bromine is a dark red liquid, and is very reactive. It is named for the greek word stench.
