Evanti was the first Afircan American to develop a professional career in the Grand Opera. She made her debut in France and also performed in Italy. Her stage name was a combination of her maiden name (Evans) and her husband's name (Tibbs) She graduated from Howard University in 1917 She auditioned for the Metropolitian Opera in 1931 The Metropolitian Opera denied her because of racial differences. She performed in the White House for Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor. She was extremely popular in Latin American countries after touring Argentina and Brazil in 1940 During the 1950s she visited Africa to sing. She wrote the Ghana day Independence song
