Origionally the Bastille was called Saint-Antoine. (Origonated as the Saint Antoine Gate.) However during 1370-1383 it was exstended into a hudge fortress in order to be used to defend the east end of Paris & the Hotel Saint -Poroyal palace during the 100 years war. After the war it was converted into a prison. On July 14 1789 it was stormed by angry Peasents, Noblemen, & Cleargy in order to break away for the rule of king Louis XIV.
*Parliment wanted the absoloute power to be shared. *Priest & other low level spirital figures wanted more money. *Nobles wanted to share the kings absoloute power. *Middle class wanted rights to their own land & the right to vote. *Farmers angry about tithes and fuedal rights.
May, 5, 1789- Louis XIV assembled the 3 estates in order to discus a new tax that he bealives will solve the countrys finance issues. (Clergy, Nobles, Peasents.) However the Peasents found Louis new taxes unjust as did many others including some Nobles and Clergymen. On June 2oth these men took an oath called the Tennis Court Oath. (They vowd to stay together till a constitution was established.) On July 9 they became known as the National Constitution Assembly. The dissmissal of Jacques Necker by the king enraged these French citizens even more. THey desided to storm the Bastille (bealiveing it to hold things that would allow King Louis to stop their up rising. On July, 14, 1789 the French raided and destroyd the bastille. Beginning the French Revoloution!
