Origin of peaches
- Peaches are grown in middle of july. The origin of the peach tree is uncertain but it is thought to have come from china. The tree is mentioned in the writings of the chinese philosopher confucius in the fifth century BC, and is also represented on antique chinese porcelain and other artifacts. As its specific botanical name suggests , the tree was introduced to europe from persia, probably by romans. By the first half od the sixteenth century, the peach had appeard in england and was cultivated in the celebrated London garden of Gerard.
Who brought peaches to the U.S. ?
- Seed were broght w/ colonists from england.
- Spanish explorers in the 16th Century.
What region of the U.S. did it influence ?
- From west California.
- The peach was a symbol of immortality to ancient chinese. They placed bowls pf peaches in the tombs of close family members to prevent the bodies from decaying. Giving the fruit as a gift was a sign of friendship.
