Cyclical Plot
Daniel Tse - B4 IBSL English Yr. 2
The repeated visits from the creditors contributes to the cyclical plot of this novel, because it demonstrates that Azaro's family is poor everyday and no matter how hard they work, they still owe others money. The cyclical poverty seems to overwhelm the promise of better life.
Pg. 188 - I seemed to scatter in all directions. I became leaves lashed by the winds of recurrence.
Pg. 53 - The creditors came one after the other, as if they had planned it.
The 'winds of recurrence' seems to symbolize the misforturnes Azaro faces. By the word 'recurrence,' Okri is showing that Azaro will frequently faces horror and harm, and this is not limited to him but aslo to his family. The misfortunes happening are cyclical and encountered everyday. It can be inferred that it is impossible for the poor to rise up the social ladder because the poverty they face is too severe
Rats are present throughout the novel, and this contributes to the cyclical plot of this novel. They represent poverty, and their presence shows that Azaro's family is in coonstant poverty. Even when they all died, their fumes and the massive corpses themselves still suggests that poverty still takes over Azaro's family, and escaping poverty will take a long time
Pg. 235 - The room was a Calvary of rats, a battleground of them.
Azaro's father usually comes home either exhausted or wounded, and that's because he doesn't support the party fo the rich. This resulted him carrying heavier loads everyday and getting beaten up by others. This cyclical nature seems to show Azaro's family is suffering from constant poverty and misfortunes, yet their ability to live on demonstrates that they still don't give up on their own values and beliefs. Okri seems to be trying to tell that though the poor are politically powerless, their values, traditions, and beliefs are strong as ever.
Pg. 284 - Azaro, my son, they were going to kill your father. Because I won't vote for them...
