In August 1939, Germany and Russia signed a nonaggressive treated between Hitler and Stalin to keep Germany away from Russia.
Battle of Kursk July 4, 1943 Germany launched an offensive into a dense Russian defence. Russia was well-prepared to defend against German tanks, then Russia launched their counter attack taking out the core of the ramaining German forces in the East.
Battle of Staingrad July 17, 1942 Hitler ordered an attack on Stalingrad because it was a large manufacturing city and was named after Stalin. This was considered the turning point of the war for the Soviet Union.
Battle of Moscow October 2, 1941 - Jan 7, 1942 Germany attacked Moscow because it was the capital city of Russia. Germany took Moscow, but after a counter attack by Russia, Germany was driven out of Russia.
From the start of the war, Russia suffered 10,700,000 military amd 11,400,000 civilians were killed throughout the war. 18,000,000 were wounded.
By 1941 women made up 40 percent of the soviet labour force. Women built ships and planes, produced munitions, and staffed offices.
Part of Russia's success in World War 2 was the great preparation for the invasion of Normandy. Russia planned this attack for two years.
Russia burnt many of Germany's supplies when they invaded Russia. This tactic weakened Germany more and more throughout the war. This is what helped end Germany's participation in the war.
Great leadership by Russian generals was also another reason why Russia was successful in WWII. Military Leaders like Georgi K. Zhukov who commanded the USSR revolt against Germany and Aleksandr Vasilevsky who strategized most of Russia's offensives.
